Ever

I drive to the marina, placing the journal in my locker with the other pertinent records that I keep after I make sure I’m not being followed. My chef has prepared a steak on the grill and has dinner served on the upper deck. I’ve eaten out here every night since Noa and I made love in the lounger. It makes me feel closer to her, and right now, I want nothing more than to be holding her in my arms.

My mind skips to the pregnancy test, wondering if she used it this morning like she said?

Am I a father?

Am I capable of being one?

If my plan falls apart, I’ll never lay eyes on the baby or Noa again. I will become as much of a danger to them as my father was to my mother, only not from me, but the hands of my family. It’s the reason I never wanted children, but the thought of Noa having my baby brings me a joy inside I haven’t experienced before. I can only imagine it’s a small portion of what my mother felt. Her sole purpose became protecting me, and I’ll do the same for my child even if I have to sacrifice being part of his or her life.

“This has to work.” I exhale, collapsing on my bed, gripping my phone in my hand, wanting so badly to call Noa. “Hold on, baby,” I say, dropping it on the bed, closing my eyes.

Nightmares haunt me, waking me up in a cold sweat at three in the morning. I toss and turn until five before I give up and head for a pot of coffee. I sip on a mug while scanning the details I have on Stanley Turro. His weakness is his sixteen-year-old daughter. I’d never harm her, but she’ll be my pawn if things don’t go as planned.

As soon as the clock hits nine, I dial Chief Bentley’s office, and I’m put through immediately. “I have the journal in safekeeping. Once the deal goes down, I’ll release it to you.”

“Alright. I want you to know that you were correct in assuming one of your father’s men would be by to check on our arrangement.”

“Victor. He’s going to be a problem.”

“I gathered as much.”

“Certainly you could have one of your men follow him and detain him for a few days.”

“I’ll assign a man to him, but I won’t have him interfere if he’s not doing something illegal. That’s not how I operate.”

“I understand, and believe it or not, I respect it.”

“I’ve informed the FBI that you will be working with us, and they are fully on board with giving you your freedom, but in order to protect you from your family knowing you set them up, they’ll arrest you along with your father and Nick.”

“As long as I gain my freedom in the end, that’s what matters.”

“I’m going to text you the number to my direct line. Contact me when everything is in place.”

“Will do.”

Slipping my arm through my casual jacket, I finish dressing and opt for an open collar, no tie.
